What matters to me?
Trying to ensure the team has a share vision and purpose is a common challenge I tend to see on a lot of projects. As individuals we often have a number of values that define us. These values become our governing variables and drive our action in the majority of instances. They define what is important to us on project and what we hold ourselves accountable to when measuring ourselves against success.
What matters to our team?
When this concept is apply to a team structure to number of possibilities for what values are important to us is multiply to the power of the number of people involved. This can often lead to mis-alignment or lack of agreement of what is important to us a group.
What do we believe are the important values we should adhere to in the context of our project? How do we feel we are performance against those values both individually and collectively?
Team Values Radar
A tool I have used to surface the values of individual team members, drive consensus within the team of a share vision and purpose that we should all hold ourselves and one another account to is the team values radar.
How it works
I provide the team will a sheet with a number of values written on it. The based set I tend to use is as follows;
- creativity
- decisiveness
- honesty
- fun
- pragmatism
- simplicity
- balance
- caution
- reliability
- thoroughness
- cleanliness (important )
- excellence
- commitment
- respect
- trust
- responsibility
- cooperation
- discipline
- openness
- courage
- craftsmanship
- continuous improvement
This is not a exclusive list, simply a starter for conversation. Depending on the context of the project values listed here may not be applicable, others maybe be missing.
Therefore, the first task I undertake when running this session is to review the list and ensure we have a share understanding of what each value means. Once we have completed an initial review, I ask if there are any gaps or values we should be included that are not listed. If they team agrees, they are added to the list for consideration.
Once we have an agree taxonomy of values I then ask the team to dot vote for the top 5 values, as they believe, we should adhere to as a team on the current project.
